The Next Great Pass

Boston College and Persevere throw a Hail Mary to the Gulf Coast

On November 23, 1984, with six seconds left in the game and the Eagles down 45-41, BC Quarterback Doug Flutie threw one of the greatest passes in College football history. His touchdown pass beat the Miami Hurricanes on their home turf and proved that miracles are indeed possible. The famed “Hail Mary” pass has become ingrained with the school’s identity and mission of excellence as Boston College has emerged as one of the top Universities in the country.

Over two decades later, it is time for Boston College to throw its next great pass. In addition to its reputation for academic excellence and its top-tier athletic programs, BC has achieved greatness through its dedication to service. “The Next Great Pass” is an initiative that seeks to mobilize the BC community to help make miracles happen in Pass Christian, Mississippi by defeating a hurricane of a very different kind—Hurricane Katrina.

The Boston College community is working with Persevere Disaster Relief, a nonprofit organization based in Pass Christian, MS founded and run by BC graduate. Together they are aiming at completing the following goals by June 2007, as a year long commitment to put forth a “Hail Mary” effort to help revive Mississippi’s Gulf Coast:

The magic number in 1984 was 48yds - In 2006 these are the numbers we are shooting for:

    • Contribute 4,800 hours of service in Pass Christian, MS and

    surrounding communities

    • Raise 22,000 dollars to assist residents of the area.
