About the Community We Served in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina:

  • Persevere worked primarily in the coastal communities of Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis and Waveland Mississippi.

  • The Eastern eye wall of Katrina, considered the worst part of a Hurricane, traveled directly over this section of Mississippi.

  • Katrina’s 37 foot storm surge touched up to 10 miles inland in some places.

  • Most of the people in this community lost everything to Katrina.

  • As of 4/07 roughly 80% were still living in temporary FEMA trailers or with family and friends.

  • Waveland suffered a 90% loss of structures.

  • Bay St. Louis lost every municipal building in town.

  • "The Isles," a section of Pass Christian, was left with only 23 houses out of the 450 homes pre-storm.

  • Persevere worked directly with residents as well as the local and county long term recovery committees of each city.
